A Difficult Golf Swing Isn’t Necessary

The golf swing can be as difficult as you want to make it or as simple as you want to make it … but it will never be easy. However, the Golfer that makes it simple will be able to repeat their non-difficult swing much more easily than the Golfer that complicates it.

And this is an important point because when we’re swinging badly … most people try to figure out what they’re doing wrong. Yet, using this process … you’re most likely adding more steps (and thoughts) into your swing on top of all the other thoughts you already have.

So before you know it … you have a mountain of swing thoughts that will eventually come crashing down!

Thus, you’re now the Golfer that says things like: “I can not remember all the things I need to do in my swing” or “the golf swing is so difficult”.

The golf swing isn’t easy. And yes, it’s difficult to repeat a consistent golf swing shot after shot. However, many Golfers make it harder than it is by making their swing more difficult than necessary.

That’s why it’s critical that you understand the feel of your golf swing. As most people are “visual” … you have the perception that you need to be able to see what the golf swing looks like. But although you think you need to see it … it really doesn’t help you to make corrections when necessary.

The number 1 attribute that Golfers lack is having a feel (awareness) of their golf swing. Feeling what their arms are doing in the golf swing, what your body is doing, what your hands are doing … because understanding that feel … allows you to feel what the clubhead is doing.

(Remember, the clubhead is what hits the golf ball and forces the ball to go in a certain direction. If your clubhead is facing straight when it hits the golf ball … the ball goes straight. If the clubhead is facing to the right … the ball goes to the right. If the clubhead is too low … it hits the ground too soon. If it is too high … you top the ball.)

Having feel means that when you do hit a bad shot … you could then feel the correction before your next shot. Whereas the Golfer that lacks feel will hit a bad shot to the right … and when they try to fix it … they overcorrect and hit their next shot way to the left.

The Player that has feel can make slight adjustments that allows them to stay more consistent. Meaning maybe one wayward shot … but the ability to have felt what went wrong and then having the clubhead awareness to make a slight adjustment before their next swing.

It’s really that simple.

But, we live in a golfing world filled with the over-teaching of swing techniques that have very little to do with feel or being aware of your clubhead.

That’s why most Golfers get worse from a golf lesson. Because the more they learn … the less they feel. The less they feel … the worse they get.

And that’s where the value of using drills to learn to feel your swing is so important. The most successful Instructors use drills that allow you to feel your golf swing versus saying “well Margaret … you need to keep your left arm straight and have the toe of your club pointing up in the backswing”. Or telling someone they need to turn their shoulders or keep their head down or not sway.

Those words do not teach feel … thus, no matter how much you try to do those things … you can’t repeat them. Because you have no feel of how to successfully implement these techniques. All you have is the voice of your Instructor or the visual of them showing you.

But voice and sight doesn’t help with feel or awareness!

Because what one person feels isn’t what the next person feels. Feel is an individual awareness that can’t be expressed to you by another person. However, through the process of using a drill … a superior Instructor can ask you questions that will allow you to express your feel to us.

Then, and only then, can an Instructor start working with you to help you build a more consistent, simple golf swing.

The Monkey has a certain fondness of making their swing more difficult and complicated

The Player thrives in continuing to improve their feel and awareness
