"Don't Let Slow Play Affect Your Golf Game"

More than a few Golfers have written to me asking if I could write an article on "how to keep my poise and play golf with very slow Golfers". This seems to be an issue that affects a lot of Golfers and your ability to keep your rhythm going on the golf course.

Let me start by telling you a story about my golf game the other day. Unfortunately, I don't play as much golf as you probably think I do. So when I do have a chance to play – it's a special treat. Then add the fact that I was going to meet an old friend I hadn't seen in over a year and that I was also playing at my all-time favorite golf course ... well, you can then understand my disappointment being paired up with Mr. Coors Light.

It's difficult playing with someone that gets on your nerves regardless of whether they're very slow or are constantly talking when you're getting ready to play a shot or opening beers at 8:30 am (and continuing to do so every other hole for 36 holes) – or in my case last week with Mr. Coors Light: having him accomplish all of the above.

Needless to say - it's very difficult to concentrate on your PLAN with all of this going on around you.

When you have a slow Golfer in your group; the toughest task for many Golfers is that you always end up being the last person to finish putting on the green. And because of the slow Golfer – there's always a group in the middle of the fairway waiting for you to putt whilst they have their legs crossed, leaning on the club they want to hit and staring at you to hurry-up as they mumble to each other about how slow you are.

It gets to the point of you wanting to look back at that group so that you can scream – "It's not me. It's him! He's driving me crazy!!!"

Though with you being the last Golfer and feeling as though the weight of the world is on you to hurry up and putt fast so that you can get off the green in the next two seconds ... well, let's just say that you miss a lot of 5 to 10 footers that you should've made. Which means you have a lot of potential Pars that become Bogey's and a lot of Bogey's that become dreaded Double Bogey's.

How do you overcome this?

It may not be easy to do, but the first step is to tell that person and let it be known early in the round. This happened the other day in the two rounds my friend and I were paired with Mr. Coors Light. We started off with a good pace and were right on the group in front of us all the way through the 7th hole. Then we started to fall behind.

As I started to notice the group behind us beginning to wait for us in the fairway, I said I needed to do two things: One, watch my Pace of Play. I might've been starting to slow down to the speed of Mr. Coors Light. Two, I needed to speak with him after we get off the green.

Now, this isn't always an easy thing to do, especially when you have a guy on his 4th beer at 10:15 am. Though, I needed to do it or it would've affected not just my game, but my friend's game, the Golfers behind us, the Golfers behind them and the Golfers the rest of the day as the pace for the entire course would've been slowed because of our group. Besides, do you think the Ranger on the golf course that day would've done anything? He didn't even notice us being two holes behind the group in front of us as he was so absorbed driving slowly down the cart path peering into the bushes looking for lost golf balls.

Which brings me to a point – why do so many Rangers drive around with golf ball retrievers? What do they need them for besides to snag golf balls that they load up in a plastic bag in their golf cart that each day gets emptied into their personal golf bag?

But going back to the Golfer in my group enjoying his Rocky Mountain Refreshment; I just said – 'Mr. Coors Light, we're falling behind the group in front of us and the group behind us is often waiting on us. I'm going to do my part to speed up my play – will you do the same?'

Ask me if that worked. Of course it worked! His response and the response I receive just about every time is – 'Oh, I didn't realize we were playing slow. I'll step up my pace. Thank you.' Most Golfers don't really understand they're slow until you tell them. And nobody wants to be known as a slow Golfer – so people will actually appreciate you for not allowing them to get that reputation.

On-the-other-hand, often times the toughest Golfers to play with are the “Ball Hawks”. You know who I'm speaking about – they're the ones that can't stand to lose a golf ball. They search forever for their golf ball in the trees or the water. And when you do muster up the courage to say – 'I think that's gone. Why don't you just drop one?' They often come up with the one rule they know in the rule book – "Well the rule book says I can search for 5 minutes!"

And with this Golfer, having by the 15th hole having lost 7 golf balls – you've spent 35 minutes of your round looking for golf balls that were never found. No wonder golf can take 5 hours to play!

What do I do in that situation? I bring extra golf balls. Not Pro V1's of course. Though, whenever I help a Golfer find a golf ball, I always seem to find at least one other golf ball ... 'what were you hitting?' "I'm hitting a Pinnacle Gold" 'That’s too bad, this is a Top Flite'.

So where does that found golf ball go? Either to that Golfer or into my golf bag (not for me to hit – it's for future use so I can give to a slower Golfer that loses their golf ball).  For example:  Once a Golfer goes into the trees to look for their golf ball, I always help them look. After one minute of searching – I might say: 'I think that one's gone. Here hit this one. I believe you could drop it right here.'

Trust me; a “Ball Hawk” is going to walk over to the golf ball you just dropped on the ground – they can't help it! Don't cheat for them and give them a preferential lie, but don't put it in a spot where they would rather keep looking for their golf ball in hopes of an easier shot than you gave them. And please, make it an attractive enough of a golf ball for them to call off their golf ball search.

'What did you hit - a Maxfli? Yeah, I think it's gone. Here hit this Top Flite xl2000 – have you ever hit one of these - it's a pretty good golf ball.' And before they can say a word, drop it onto a good lie which gives them an opening to the fairway. And then say – 'You actually have a shot here.'

Ask me if that works. Of course it works! The answer just about every time, after they see where you dropped the golf ball is – "Yeah, you're right, that golf ball's gone. Here keep that one; I'll hit one of the golf balls I found." Because of course they found 4 golf balls in their search, didn't find theirs, but would've kept looking because I believe they like the enjoyment of finding as many golf balls as they can.

Now, if they don't get the hint or they feel obligated to continue searching – then you have to become more direct: 'Coors Light, you're not going to find that one. It's in there pretty good. C'mon, we need to keep our pace of play moving. Besides, if you do find that ball – you won't have a shot anyway. Use this one and make a good shot.'

Nothing of what I'm saying to do is a bad thing. It's good for everybody involved – including the Golfer that's loosing a lot of golf balls. Have you ever noticed that the longer a Golfer looks for a golf ball without finding it – the more frustrated they become. And of course the more frustrated they become – the worse they play. So by you helping them to find a golf ball sooner – they'll actually have more enjoyment on the golf course and eventually play better.

Playing with slow Golfers and playing your best Golf is tough, if not impossible. Though often times, the slow Golfer doesn't realize that they're a slow Golfer and they just need some gentle reminding.

The Monkey is the Golfer that constantly lets another Golfer influence their play on the golf course

The Player is prepared with a PLAN to play with anyone

Go ahead, be a Player!

“Champions Of The Pinehurst Member – Guest!”

Good morning Hayden,

A dream so impossible that it has never actually been dreamed (by me) has unexpectedly become actuality! As one of your students, I thought you might enjoy reading this anecdote of golf-life-affirmation.

Last week I played as the guest of my friend and frequent golfing partner, Don T, who is a member of Pinehurst #7.

We played well in our flighted matches going undefeated and winning the flight. Then on Saturday afternoon the 7 flight-winning teams went to a playoff that lasted 5 more holes with one or two teams being eliminated at each hole. We found ourselves still standing with just one other team on the tee of the par five 18th hole. The championship went to the team that won that hole

On that deciding hole of the Championship Match, there were a couple of hundred members that went wild when my playing partner, Don, stepped up and cooly sank a putt for birdie and the championship that I never dared dream was possible. The roar of the crowd took me back 58 years to the occasion when I scored my first touchdown in high school football. What a thrill then and now! I believe I can live out the balance of my life content about gratifying athletic endeavors -- one at age 15, the other at 73. I've had 2 holes-in-one since taking up this game, and while both have been thrilling -- nothing else compares to the thrill of this win.

At the banquet that night the head pro talked about this last shoot-out hole, saying it was the best played finale he'd ever seen in the event. Don and I truly appreciated the warm applause as we received our traditional Putterboy trophies.

Cheers,

Chris S – Pinehurst, North Carolina

“GMS Is By Far The Best Golf Tuition Ever!”

Hi Alex,

I've just got back from my trip and wanted to thank you for all your help in organising it for me.

GMS is by far the best golf tuition that I have ever been part of. Scot was so easy to get on with and explained everything perfectly, a real credit to your company.

I went over with the sole purpose of learning how to improve my chipping around the greens and have come home with a full understanding of my game.

I now know why I've made a good shot and why I've made a bad shot which gives me so much more confidence in improving my game, and can now practice with a purpose.

Can't wait to get on the range.

Thanks again,

Dave G – Newtownabbey, Ireland

Have You Been To Level 1.5?

GMS is proud to announce that we have held a record number of Level 1.5 programs so far this year to returning GMS Golfers.  As may know, Level 1.5 is available exclusively to Golfers that have attended our Level 1 program.  So to be eligible to attend Level 1.5, you would have had to come see us for the Level 1 program.

Level 1.5 program has been so successful for the Golfers coming to see us for the second, third, fourth and even fifth time - that the emails coming in or almost overwhelming.  Below, I have included just two of the latest emails we have received about Level 1.5.

What does this record number of Level 1.5 Golfers tell us?  It reaffirms how effective the Level 1 program is.  It shows how many Golfers are improving using the GMS Program that focuses on improving all parts of your game (golf swing, short game, putting, bunker), along with the intagibles that contribute to better golf, more consistent golf (green reading, visualization, pre-shot routine, course management, as well as how to practice correctly).

They're improving so much and value the GMS techniques so much -- they come back to take their game to an even higher level.

Level 1.5 programs are scheduled at select GMS locations this summer.  So if you have seen us for Level 1 and want hear more about Level 1.5 ... give me a call or email so can hear more about how Level 1.5 takes you to an even higher level of knowledge about your golf swing.

However, if you haven't yet attended Level 1 ... what are you waiting for?  A Magic Golf Pill?  Start your golf improvement today by calling us!

"I Participated In A Tournament The Day After I Finished Level 1.5 And I Won My Flight!"

Hi Hayden,

I just wanted to let you know that I participated in a tournament the day after I finished Level 1.5, and I won my flight!  I scored 7 shots lower than my lowest score this season!  Thanks for everything.

On my drive home, I hit rush hour traffic both near Washington, DC and Baltimore so I had plenty of time to think about my training with you.  If you recall, you said that the low chip shot was my "go to" shot around the green.  It appeared that I was more adept at that shot than others around the green during my time in class with you.  I think I may have mentioned to you that I had good, maybe even great, skill and feel around the green when I first started playing.

Well, guess what?  That low shot that you had me do, and which I became adept at, was very much the same shot I had before I was ruined by lessons from listening to others and reading too many books!  Thank you so much for being able to get that important shot back to me.  You brought me full circle to a place at which I chipped well, and you trained me and gave me the drills to make it even better.  I think the most important drill was the "You-can't-eat-lunch-until-you-hole-it-out" drill.  Haha, just kidding.

"Our Lessons Were Stunning!"

Alex,

Sitting on the plane and just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks for a great three days. Our lessons with Marc were stunning.  For the first time, I actually know what it feels like to launch my hips through my swing.  For some reason, that feeling never clicked before.  The stuff he taught built wonderfully on what we had learned from our previous visit to GMS.

Glenda and I both look forward to traveling back next spring to take the 2.0 class.

Our Newest GMS Location Reports - Wisconsin & Montana

"It Really Is Grand Geneva Nice!"

Marc has just returned from spending a few days at our GMS location just 1 hour outside of Chicago (45 minutes west of Milwaukee) at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

When he got back and was asked about the Resort, he stated – “This maybe our best GMS location!”

www.GolfMadeSimple.com/midwest-golf-schools.html

For Marc to say this is pretty impressive because if he does have a favorite GMS location … he usually doesn’t share it.  “My favorite GMS location?  They’re all great.  I wouldn’t have our program at the resorts that we have them if I didn’t think they allowed for a great GMS Experience.”

So to hear him come out and just state that Grand Geneva Resort might be our best location … that’s high, high praise.  He spoke particularly high about the golf courses, especially the Highlands course at Grand Geneva Resort.  “For this golf course not to be rated as one of the best, most fun golf courses to play is a travesty!  That is simply an outstanding golf course to play.  I could play that golf course everyday.”

Here are some additional bullet points from Marc:

Golf in Wisconsin - "People need to start thinking about traveling to Wisconsin for golf.  Here's a state that has marvelous golf courses.  You have Whistling Straits which has held the PGA Championship, you have Erin Hills which is holding this years US Amatuer and will be hosting the 2017 US Open ... and you have a phenomenal facility at Grand Geneva Resort!  Although the cheese and brats are good in Wisconsin ... the golf is even better!"

Practice facility at Grand Geneva Resort – “Perfect, perfect green grass to hit off in our own private practice area.  The practice putting green is huge and in incredible condition.  There’s so much room to practice straight putts, however plenty of undulations to practice uphill and downhill putts … plus I haven’t seen a putting green that was better designed to do our Green Reading session.”

The Golf Courses - “The two golf courses are excellent.  The Highlands Course (designed by Bob Cupp) is beautiful.  One gorgeous hole after another - #4 is just the sweetest par 3 you’re ever going to see.  I couldn’t believe how good a shape the courses were so early in the season.  Pristine conditions.”

Restaurants at Resort - “The hotel has 3 restaurants including a steak & seafood restaurant called The Geneva Chop House; an Italian restaurant called Ristoranté Brissago, an American style restaurant called The Grand Café, plus a coffee shop serving Starbucks Coffee in the lobby.  Each restaurant fills a niche … you’re on vacation, what are the two types of food you want to eat?  In my book, a complete vacation includes outstanding Italian food one night and great steak the next.  Well, Grand Geneva has both!”

Easy to get to -  “I flew into Milwaukee, got a car and was at the resort in 45 minutes.”

Service at the Resort -  “Growing up on the East Coast, I always heard that people that lived in the Midwest were ‘Midwest nice’.  I never thought much of that saying as I always thought people on the East Coast were always nice … after spending time at Grand Geneva Resort I have come to the conclusion that people in the Midwest really are nicer.  Grand Geneva nice.”

The Newest GMS Location - Big Sky Country Montana

Near Glacier National Park

GMS is proud to announce our newest location at The Wilderness Club in beautiful Montana.  How good is this new location?  This is a phenomenal facility!  It was rated as the “#2 Best New Golf Course in 2009 by Golf Magazine”.

Classes start July 8th, 2011 – reservations start Today!

http://www.golfmadesimple.com/big-sky-montana-golf-schools.html

What can we tell you about this location?  Well, it was originally planned to be an exclusive, high-end, private golf club.  However, things didn’t turn out the way the original developers planned.  The new owners of The Wilderness Club called GMS and asked us if we would like to open our program at their facility.  They said, after you see what we have up here for you and your Golfers … you’re going to love it.  And they are absolutely correct - after seeing the property we couldn’t turn them down.

Our Practice Area

And the Practice Facility?  It is love at first sight!  What else can I say?

http://www.golfmadesimple.com/big-sky-montana-golf-schools.html

Accommodations

Accommodations are right on property.  When the clubhouse was built – it was built with private rooms so that out of state members could fly in and stay right on property.  No expense was sparred on this property.  These rooms are now our rooms: great beds, private bathrooms, etc.  It’s like a private hotel at the golf course … we have included photos on the website.

Surrounding Area

Can you imagine a more beautiful place to spend a few days than Big Sky country in the summer?  We are talking about one of the most beautiful spots in North America.

You’re very close to Glacier National Park, along with some of the best fly fishing and horseback riding in the world!

So if you’re coming just for GMS and golf – it’s pretty convenient.  Yet, if you’re looking to extend your holiday/vacation a few days - you're looking at an even more memorable time.

Travel Info

At first glance, it may seem as if this location may not be as “convenient” to get to. Yet, it’s actually pretty convenient. As far as getting to our Montana location (The Wilderness Club in Eureka, Montana) … it’s fairly easy.  If you’re in the US and flying into to see us - Glacier International Airport is just 60 minutes away and has direct (non-stop) flights from Seattle, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago and Atlanta.

Plus, for everyone in British Colombia and Alberta … if you’re looking forward to taking advantage of the weak US Dollar ($1.00 CAD = $1.03 USD) … we’re not a far drive from Calgary, Fernie or the Canadian Rockies Airport in Cranbrook (with direct flights from Vancouver).
