"Are You Practicing Your Core?"

Click Here To Listen to The Audio Version of Golf Improvement Weekly

Can you improve your swing by working on it 100% of the time? Can you improve your swing even more by working on your swing 50% of the time and working on your body 50% of the time? There's no doubt you’d find a lot more consistency splitting your time between practicing your swing and working on your body - than if you just worked on your swing 100% of the time!

Many Golfers are trying to improve their swings by reading tips submitted to the golf magazines by the PGA and LPGA Tour Pros. But these tips are fruitless for 7 out of every 8 Golfers because only 1 Golfer out of 8 has the physical capabilities of a Tiger, Annika, Vijay Singh or any of the Top Players you hear tips from.

These Players bodies are fine tuned machines. They’ve been training their bodies to do the things they speak about for as long as they’ve been playing golf. But, if your body isn’t in as good a physical shape as Tiger – how can you expect to do the things he suggests. 7 out of 8 Golfers can try to do what Tiger says to do – but you won’t be able do it well because you’re not strong or flexible enough.

And when I say strong – I’m not talking about how much you can bench press. That kind of strength is almost useless in the golf swing and could possibly be a negative. What I mean by strength is Core Strength! What I mean is the coordination of your muscles to fire together to produce effortless power that will contribute to you having a smooth controlled swing. What I’m talking about is letting your muscles help you produce a long, beautiful, consistent ball flight.

The Monkey wants to improve their golf game and will spend an hour or two at the local driving range beating ball after ball, but they won’t spend 30 seconds doing 10 push-ups. Will 10 push-ups help you hit the golf ball better? Well, why don’t you try it for yourself? When’s the last time you did 10 push-ups? What are you scared of? Are you afraid you might hit the golf ball better?

Why do you think Tiger does Pilates? Why does Annika do about 1000 sit-ups a day? Sure it’s their job to play better golf all the time. But if you’re going to invest 5 hours each week to golf – why wouldn’t you add 3 minutes a day to do 10 push-ups and 20 sit-ups? Don’t you want to play your best golf during those 5 hours? And don’t you agree that becoming a little stronger would help your golf swing?

You don’t need to be athletically talented to have fun playing Golf. Though if you want to improve – you should do something athletic! When’s the last time you did 20 sit-ups? Will 20 sit-ups help you hit the golf ball better? Well, why don’t you try it for yourself?

There’s always been the argument whether Golf is an athletic sport. Is the golf swing an athletic maneuver? My belief is that if you’re using the muscles in your body to make your club move upwards of 65 mph – then you’re doing something athletic. Let me put it this way – Go do 20 sit-ups and then hit a golf ball and tell me you don’t feel your abdomen working. Many people don’t feel these muscles because their muscles are asleep. You haven’t used them for so long – they don’t even know to participate in your golf swing. And that maybe one reason your back is aching so much. Instead of your Core providing the power and control – you’re using your lower back – ouch!

Is Tiger an athlete? How about Annika? How about Jack Nicklaus? Or Jim Furyk? How about you?

Listen, I’m no Jack Lalanne. Though, I do know that you won’t improve the control you have over the club without getting stronger. Do you think if your forearms were a little stronger that you’d be in more control of your club face during your swing? Do you think 10 push-ups will help your forearms get stronger?

Ok, if 10 is too much, start with 5. Weak forearms? Then start with 10 push-ups off your knees.

The Monkey practices their swing by hitting balls 100% of their practice time

The Player practices their swing by making their Core stronger

Hi Scott,

Just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our three days with you. Golfing season is just starting, but I played last Sunday and got a 99! This is a course I play on weekly and prior to this my best score was 108...my average score is 115. I got a 46 on the front 9 and 53 on the back nine. I used the Tick Tock and was very pleased with the results. Thanks again for a great GMS experience!

Best Regards

Hayden,

We were pleased to hear about your new position within GMS – well deserved – you are a talented teacher.

After we got back from our 3 day GMS at the end of last year – the weather did not cooperate and we were not able to get in any real golf until March. We have been playing quite regularly since then and have both put into practice a lot of what were learned at GMS. In any case I thought I would share the results of the opening scramble at our club - we both played the best Golf we ever have played. We ticked-tocked around the course and left with a prize of $400!

This is how our Results were displayed in the local newspaper:

OPENING DAY SCRAMBLE RESULTS A fantastic turnout of 115 golfers enjoyed last Sunday’s Opening Day Scramble. The weather was gorgeous, the greens fast and everyone seemed to have a great time. The winning team was headed by Susan M and Sonya F. Second place went the team of Rick and Helene C.

Best ,

Alex is Back!!

Thank you Scott for filling in for me last week. The reports I received was that you did a marvelous job with The Buzz while I was out in California for a few days. What can I say - if you’ve never been to California – you should go. You can definitely see why it’s the most populous state in America.

Back here in Florida – our June dates are filling up fast! Though, we do have a few spots available for St. Augustine and Amelia Island. And in St. Augustine – if you’re staying at The Marriott Renaissance – family members have the ability to use the Marriott shuttle to their beach club! So as you’re improving your golf game – your family members might be just as happy as you enjoying the beach and pool. The beach club has food, drinks and even a work-out room to keep everybody busy and smiling!

Dates in June for our Lake Tahoe location have a couple of sessions still open and there some open dates in July and August. Lake Tahoe might be our best West Coast location for Golfers to bring family and non-Golfers while you’re working with us on your Golf Game. There are literally hundreds of swimming lakes and hiking trails – they can go fishing and horseback riding as well. You’ll never have to worry about the rest of your family staying busy as you feed your golf habit with us.

Karen and I will arrange all your lodging needs, along with helping you set-up activities for your family members. What a perfect way to take a family vacation and also improve your golf game at the same time. Everyone will be going to bed with a smile on their face! Regards,

Alex – Director

Are You Trying To Make Par?

TPC Sawgrass - The 17th or 18th

Which Is The Tougher Hole?

This week, one of the best golf tournaments in the world is being played. The Players Championship at The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass just up the road from the GMS office in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Unfortunately this golf course is known for the infamous 17th hole – the Island Green. Yes, it’s a good hole – but it definitely isn’t a great hole compared to the others on the golf course. There are some far better holes on this tough, tough golf course.

For example – my all time favorite golf hole – the 18th might be the best designed hole in golf. Even if I had the talent to describe things like Hemingway – I couldn’t describe it well enough, you just need to play it. It’s a monster!

The 18th is the one to watch – because last year, as with every year it was rated the toughest hole in the tournament. The average score for the best Players in the world was 4.344 strokes per hole. The best Players in the world averaged well over Par for this hole. Besides having 117 bogies made, it recorded 31 double bogeys and 10 others.

The 18th is ranked as being one of the toughest 50 holes on the PGA Tour. And it’s my belief that because the golf course will be playing more firm this year - that you’ll see the scoring average get closer to 4.5 on this classic finishing hole.

Share Your Thoughts About Which Hole You Think Is Tougher

“Who wouldn't want to hit it as far as Tiger Woods? Who wouldn't want to have the control to be as consistent as Annika? We all dream about having the same skills as these two icons - but we don't all have the dedication that's needed. Sure, for the majority of people, finding the time to practice as much as they do is next to impossible - but we can all find the time for a few push-ups and sit-ups a couple of times a week.

And you might say – ‘what will only a few push-ups and sit-ups do for me?’ Well, it's a start and it's very likely it's more than you're doing now!

The fastest way to improve your scores is becoming a better putter than you are now. The second fastest way is to strengthen your body - even just a little bit - so that you have more control over your golf club. Whoever said that 'you must get worse before you get better' probably never practiced their putting nor did a push-up!

I believe that by practicing your putting and doing a few push-ups and sit-ups - that your scores will instantly get better.”
