So I'm sitting around and somehow a Golf Magazine gets thrown in my lap. "What's this?" I say. "It's the August Issue of Golf Magazine - the worlds most widely read golf publication" a friendly voice says. "Well why are you giving it to me?"
"I thought you might like to read it. I mean, everybody reads this magazine. They have loads of tips and the very best Golf Instructors in the world contribute to it. Have you ever read a Golf Magazine?"
"I try to forget about those Monkey Days of my youth!"
"Well there's an article in this magazine that you might like to read. It's called How To Swing Bad and Gain 25 Yards."
"There's no doubt, you're right. I definitely do need to read that article!"
Now, I'm not making this up - this is classic stuff. I mean classic Golf Magazine instruction. Four things you need to think about on every swing.
The article starts out giving you four tips for you to use with your 'bad swing' -
1. At the top of your swing, strive for a flat left wrist and a right elbow set squarely on the shaft plane established at address
2. Allow your arms to drop down without moving your shoulders while you start to shift your weight forward and unwind your hips
3. Now you're trapped. The shaft is below the preferred swing plane and the clubhead is behind your right hip
4. From this position, turn your shoulders like a madman. What pulls this move together is a full, powerful release of your hands through impact
Let's guess what would happen to you on the first tee if you thought about - "At the top of your swing, strive for a flat left wrist and a right elbow set squarely on the shaft plane established at address. Then allowing your arms to drop down without moving your shoulders while you start to shift your weight forward and unwind your hips as you try to turn your shoulders like a madman trying to create a full, powerful release of your hands through impact".
If on any golf shot you're thinking about the above - you're toast!
And I Don't Mean The Good Type Of Toast!
Though, I must admit - I love these Golf Tips that Golf Magazine delivers each month. I believe one of the major factors that Golf Made Simple has grown and is currently growing like it is - is that Golfers love to read Golf Magazine for it's tips. Because each month they confuse your golfing situation with more and more crap like the stuff above. And thus this gets Golfers from around the world all messed up with these complicated methods (that don't work) - so that at some point you say "I need to make this game more Simple!"
Though I must continue with this Golf Magazine Tip. On the next page, they illustrate 'The recipe for pro power'. This is where they advice you to -
1. Get it to the top of your swing like Adam Scott - left wrist flat at the top, hands stretched away from shoulders creating width to produce tremendous torque
2. Stay in charge like Charles Howell III - retain potential energy developed at the top of the swing, keep arms and hands close to body (now this after they just told you to keep your arms away from your body like Adam Scott)
3. Sting it like Jonathon Byrd - shift weight on to your front foot while dragging your arms and club into the ball and have a straight line from the left shoulder to the clubhead
4. Emulate Ernie Els' release - fully extend your arms while crossing them over, while keeping your left leg straight and keeping your head back well past impact. And that you need to have your hips open to create space for your arms to extend while you keep your arms relaxed to let it all go.
5. Finish like Tiger - Squeeze your knees together as you rotate your hips and have your right shoulder and club pointed to the target.
Now I've gotten funny emails from Golfers (and maybe you have to) that talks about making the swing simple (in a sarcastic way) where it describes about keeping your eye on the ball as you turn your shoulders 90 degrees and hips 45 degrees without moving your head as you pronate your left wrist and supinate your right wrist, but don't sway as the club comes back on plane as you set the club at a 10 degree angle, while keeping your left arm straight and allow your right arm to make a 90 degree angle as you etc., etc., etc.
And as we read these funny emails, we all laugh at how hard we might be making the game and we all laugh at the stupidity of all those golf tips we've tried and been taught to do. But this stuff from Golf Magazine that you and millions of others treat as though it's on the same level as the Bible, Koran, Torah or Holy Scriptures - is just the same thing. Actually it's worse than that email because you take it so seriously because it's in Golf Magazine!
So My Advise For You Is To Go Out And Get The August Issue Of Golf Magazine
Study it and then try out all the tips inside. Better yet, get a one year subscription so that this stuff gets delivered to your door every month.
Someone asked me the other day what my Business Plan was - "Marc, how do you market Golf Made Simple? Where do you advertise to get Golfers from around the world to come see you?" My answer is and always will be - "I try to help Golf Magazine sell more subscriptions. Because the more confused you get, the more you understand the need for simplicity."
