"Seeing Golf Improvement In 2011"

(Improvement isn't an option - it's guaranteed if you have a PLAN!)

Will you allow 2011 to be your best golf year ever?  And the word 'allow' is an important word because many Golfers don't 'allow' themselves to improve.  Many Golfers sabotage their games by trying to do too much  If your goal is to improve without sabotaging youself – then I have some suggestions for you:

IMPACT -  First work on making solid impact with the golf ball before you start working on fixing your direction issues.  Too many Golfers are first trying to fix their directional issues and waste much of their time trying to fix their golf swing so that they hit the golf ball straight.

Hitting the golf ball less crooked is important, however ....

Solid impact supersedes everything else in the golf swing since it determines how the golf ball will fly. Often times Golfers are more focused on the direction they hit the golf ball. Which is understandable … however, that’s not the solution as far as becoming more consistent.

Working on directional issues by working on your "Chicken Wing" or "Outside to In Swing" or "Scooping the Golf Ball"  or etc., means you're working on fixing an Effect.  You should first be finding the Cause of the problems.  You'll find the Cause of bad direction (and those problems) if you first work on improving impact.

Too often Golfers are overly concerned with fixing their golf swing to eliminate slices and hooks. And yes, if you do have slices and hooks - you should gain better control of your golf ball flight. However, when trying to fix your golf swing for the sole purpose of stopping a slice – you will usually just end up making even more compensations in your golf swing and causing even more inconsistency.

Have you ever went for a golf lesson to fix a slice or hook? Afterwards most Golfers are even more inconsistent or worse than before their golf lesson! Because trying to soley fix a slice or hook is usually based on adding new compensations into your golf swing.  Which just means you're throwing even more compensations on top of other compensations in your golf swing!

Trying to fix the direction you hit the golf ball before you start improving your impact will just keep you on the same merry-go-round you have been riding for the last ____ (fill in the blank) years.

However, once you’re focused on learning to hit the golf ball more solid – it’s so much easier to fix direction and gain distance. Golf Instructors often debate whether the most important part of the golf swing is swing path, swing plane or clubface. And during most golf lessons ... what you most likely will be working on, will be that Instructors preference. Yet, you should be working on all 3, along with your angle of approach into the golf ball ... at the same time if you want to improve.

Now some people might say that that is too much to think about at one time. Yet, if done correctly, I would passionately disagree with anyone that brings that up. Because you can work on all 4 of those points (without thinking of all 4 points) if you're working on improving your impact with the golf ball.

How do we do it?

By helping you to control your Center of Gravity. Once you understand how important your Center of Gravity is and how it can guide all 4 of those points without you having to think about each one - you will start hitting the golf ball more solid ... which will allow you to start controlling your direction with much more ease.

The unfortunate thing is that most Golfers are not trained to do it that way.  They're trained to think about each point individually. That’s one reason why the majority of Golfers do not ever improve their golf swing from year to year.

If you want to improve your golf swing – you first need to get away from the style of instruction that hasn’t been working for you. Then you need to understand why having a PLAN of first working on consistent impact (before working on anything else) will further improve your golf swing and overall game.

GMS is nothing like anything you have ever tried before. Maybe that’s why so many improve!

The Monkey works on their golf swing with the sole purpose of fixing the direction they hit the golf ball

The Player first focuses on learning to hit the golf ball more solid so that they become more consistent

The Return Of The PGA Tour!

At this past week’s PGA Tournament in Hawaii that was exclusively for winners of PGA Tournaments in 2010 – Jonathon Byrd ripped up the course with a four round total of 24 under par.  Yes, he averaged shooting 6 under par per round.  However, everything wasn’t so brilliant for other Tournament winners from 2010.

Derek Lamely, an excellent young Player that won the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open last March, didn’t play as well as Byrd.  Lamely, on the other hand was 4 over par for the 72 hole tournament this past weekend.

Which is 28 more strokes over four rounds than Jonathon Byrd used.  Now these are 2 of the top 125 Players in the world … this isn’t comparing a 5 handicap to a Tour Player … this is Tour Player and Tour Player.  So why did they have a 7 stoke difference per round?

Byrd averaged 29 putts per round; Lamely averaged 32 putts per round.  3 strokes per round multiplied by 4 rounds equals 12 strokes.  So 43% of the 28 stroke difference was made on the putting green.  The moral of this story … yes, improve your golf swing … but spend more than 10% of your practice time on the other 40% of your game.

“I Scored 79 Twice!!”

(I Was A Mid 90's Golfer And Now I'm In The 70's!)

Hi Marc,

Happy New Year to you!

In the last month, I had 79 twice!!  And, in one of the rounds, at Ballyowen Golf Course in NJ (a tough course), I had my first round ever without a double bogey --- 11 pars, 7 bogeys

I just came back from South Carolina where I played 5x in 5 days and have a golf trip scheduled with my son, his father-in-law and brother-in-law at the end of Feb in Orlando.  Meanwhile, I practice indoors with a Styrofoam ball off a shag rug (much to my wife’s chagrin).

“From A 10 To A 6!”

(A 40% Improvement!)

Marc,

When I went to GMS in March of 2010, I was a 10 handicap.  You asked at that time what one of my goals was. One of my goals was to shot under par. Well between March and July I shot under par twice.

I got my handicap to a 6.

I was never a long hitter, but I started to hit my driver from 240 - 270 yards.

Thanks for your time and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

"And The New Location Is ...."

So this was going to be the issue of GIW that we announced a great new GMS location, well ..... I have to say that we became disappointed in our new location even before opening it.  We were really excited about it ... as I'm sure you read -- however, things have come up and we're not going to open there.

The short story is - we ran into a couple of issues with people that work at the facility - after we reached an agreement to open.  After much debate, we decided that it isn't worth the potential frustrations ... and if they're going to add restrictions after telling us otherwise (as they were courting us to open at their facility) - we just said it's not worth it.  We wouldn't be able to give our Golfers the experience you would expect from us.  So we killed the deal.

We have many other wonderful facilities where we have fantastic relationships with our Resort Partners - so in the meantime, we're going to keep it that way.

Now for some sunny news – let’s talk about the weather next week at three of our GMS locations:

La Quinta, California:  Monday – 74 F (23 C); Tuesday – 74 F; Wednesday – 73 F

Phoenix, Arizona:  Monday – 72 F (22 C); Tuesday – 73 F; Wednesday – 73 F

Boca Raton, Florida:  Monday – 77 F (25 C); Tuesday – 77 F; Wednesday - 76 F

And considering the weather reports we have been receiving, many of you have a choice between:

I can't see the face of the person shoveling the snow ... but I don't think he's as happy as the Golfers at our location in La Quinta, California!
