Interview With A Player
Click Here To Listen to The Audio Version of Golf Improvement Weekly
This week we have a very special Golf Improvement Weekly. If you remember from last week’s Issue – we wrote about a Golfer named Jim that had set a goal to qualify for the Championship Flight of his County Golf Tournament. In order to qualify for the Championship Flight – Jim needed to have a 3.0 Handicap or less.
Last summer after the 2006 County Tournament – Jim made a goal to qualify for the Championship Flight in 2007. Now, many of you aren’t trying to make it to the Championship Flight or even play in your County Championship. Though, I’d bet a large sum of money that you’d like to continue to improve your golf game. And that’s what we’re going to speak to Jim about.
Jim went from an 8 handicap to a 2.8 handicap – which isn’t an easy task. I believe that an 8 handicap improving over 5 strokes (a 63% improvement) is equivalent to a 105 Golfer improving 19 strokes and a 95 Golfer improving 12 strokes. Too put this in more ‘real-life’ terms – It’s likely going to take the same amount of effort for a person that’s 30 pounds overweight to loose 19 pounds, as it would take a person that’s only 8 pounds overweight to lose 5 pounds.
So if you use Jim as an example and do the things that he did to improve – I believe you can make great strides with your golf in the next year.
Though, because of the length of the interview – it would be hard to fit the whole interview, along with the emotion in Jim’s voice into this written Golf Improvement Weekly. So, to hear the interview in its original form – please click here to have it play on your computer. If for any reason, your computer won’t play the interview – please email us at WhatDoYouThink@GolfMadeSimple.com and we’ll email the interview to you.
I believe that this interview is too valuable for you to miss. For example, just five of the questions that I ask Jim are:
What is the #1 thing that helped you improve like you did?
What do you see other Golfers doing that are causing them frustration on the golf course?
When you used to have rounds in the 90’s, would say that the reason why was because of the ‘blow-up holes’?
How do you now stop yourself from having those ‘blow-up holes’?
What did you do over last winter to get yourself ready for this next year?
If you’re looking for some insight from a Golfer that’s just like you; that has a full time job, along with other interests besides golf – a Golfer that was frustrated with his game, but is now proud of what he’s accomplished – then listen to this interview. It’s too valuable to miss!

Scott,
Wanted to drop a line and tell you thanks again. This past week I played my best 9 holes ever on a course that I have never shot well on. I shot a 41, which is very good for me and that was with 4 pars in a row!
I was very proud of how I played and most proud of not blowing up when I was in a bad spot. One hole I hit the drive in the trees, but thankfully my wife came to GMS with me and Kathy told me to step back and take a deep breath and PLAN my next shot. I could have hit out and tried to hit the green, but not a smart choice. I thought about it and I had been hitting 50 yard shots really well so I planned on a shot out that would leave me at that distance, it was safer and a higher percentage shot than hitting at the green. I made sure I got a good solid “click” and landed where I wanted. I then hit a sand wedge to 5 feet and sunk the putt for par! I would have never played that way before GMS, I would have tried to hit the green and probably been deeper in the trees or worse.
The course marshal had been watching from a cart and came up and commented to me about how smart he thought I had played the hole and told me that must have come from years of practice and trial and error. I told him no, that came from three days in Amelia Island at GMS!
I am playing now with a whole new attitude and confidence and my game shows it. I can even have bad scoring days and feel really good because of how I know I struck the golf ball. I am finding that I can simply pick my spots and hit them now, more often than not. I am stopping balls on the green that used to just bound over. Kathy and I are both playing better and in particular our putting is great. Three putts are few and far between where they used to be a common theme.
Thanks again, we will be back!

Wataru,
This is Greg, one of your students from January. I have some very good news. On Friday, July 6th, I shot my lowest score of the year, a 94. This is pretty good, considering that before GMS my scores were typically 110 - 120. I would have scored below 90 except I made a number of 3 putts. I had one birdie, but (more importantly) nothing higher than a double bogey.
Thank you,

What’s Happening On The West Coast
The Buzz around the GMS office is that we might have some “new” announcements right after Labor Day. I can’t say much, but I’ve probably said too much already. I better change the subject before I say something I’m not supposed to say.
As you may already know – our San Diego location will be closed for the month of September while Barona Creek does their annual maintenance. And this year there’s an even more significant reason for closing for 30 days – they’ll be getting the golf course ready for the 2007 Nationwide Tour Championship that’ll be at Barona Creek towards the end of October.
So all of our West Coast GMS Programs will be held at our Lake Tahoe area location during the month of September – including Labor Day Weekend (which we do still have 3 spots available). Then our San Diego location will reopen on Monday, October 1st for 3 Day GMS Classes.
Or if Florida is in your plans – our Amelia Island location still has spots open for the August 27th to 29th class, along with a few dates in September.
Regards,
Alex – Director, Golf Made Simple Inc.

Distance or Accuracy?
We’d like to use ‘The Stat of the Week’ to celebrate the selection of Brett Wetterich to play in the 2007 Skins Game. We started following Brett’s career earlier this year and since then – his game has gone to the next level, along with being bestowed the ultimate honor by being selected to play in this year’s Skins Game.
So what has contributed to Brett’s success this year? Distance off the tee! Here at GMS – we cringe when a Golfer’s sole swing thought on the tee ‘is to keep it in the fairway’. We like to see Golfers get maximum distance and to stay away from penalty strokes. In other words – we feel being in the fairway can be overrated because Golfers that are trying to keep it in the fairway are often shortchanging themselves by losing distance. Which could influence you to have to hit a more difficult club on your next shot.
So why is Wetterich playing so well? He’s ranked 8th in Driving Distance. Where is he as far as Driving Accuracy? 173rd! This great Player is at the bottom of the list - only hitting just over half of the fairways. Yet, you might be getting upset with yourself by missing just one fairway. Please remember – there’s a huge difference between losing golf balls and missing fairways. So understand that we’re not saying to just ‘Grip it and Rip it’.
You also can start to play to your peak like Wetterich is once you overcome your fear of missing the fairway and just let yourself make a nice, fluid golf swing. Because the guy that’s ranked 8th in Driving Accuracy – Olin Browne – has never been invited to play in The Skins Game!

“There’s an enormous amount of Golf Improvement information floating around the Internet, television, golf magazines and the Golfers at the golf courses and driving ranges around the world. Everybody has the answer. Yet a very low percentage of Golfers are satisfied with their golf game.
Why is this? Why are there so many successful techniques, Swing Gurus and ground breaking video/technology teaching advancements - yet so few satisfied Golfers?
It’s called ‘Hope’. It’s the ‘Hope’ that this will be ‘the thing I need’. It’s the ‘Hope’ that there’s a secret that will instantly have me playing like Tiger or Annika. It’s the ‘Hope’ that ‘I will find consistency with my golf swing’. As long as Golfers are more focused on ‘Hope’ than they are on their PLAN – there will always be Snake Oil Salesman there to sell it to you.”
