“I Went From A 14.6 to 9.7 and Shot a 75!”
(A 33% Improvement!)
I attended GMS in Phoenix (22-24 January, 2010) and have enjoyed my golf more this year after attending. My Handicap index was 14.6 when I attended – it is now 9.7 (see attached graph) and I can now say I’ve achieved all my golf goals for the year. My main aim was to get my index to single figures and now I’ve managed to do it. I can only put it down to a combination of the skills and drills picked up at GMS and having a plan.
My other goals were to increase distance with my drives – I’d estimate I’ve added approximately 30 yards to my average distance. My target low score was 75, which I achieved in September at Ocotillo (where you need to have a plan on every hole or you end up making many sacrifices to the Water Gods). That was a practice round before a tournament. Then during the tournament I shot a 78, so I was pleased.
I love reading the Golf Improvement Weekly. Mid-year, I probably got too focused on my scores (see “small bump” in graph) – but a GIW covered that aspect, so I went back to basics.
Learning how to practice constructively has played a huge role in my enjoyment of the game – now my next big decision is which GMS I attend next? Spain sounds interesting……….

“I Broke 80!”
(I Now Feel Like A Player!)
Marc,
I attended GMS in Tampa in February and my goal for the class was to break 80. I'm glad to say that I accomplished that goal during a golf trip to Myrtle Beach last week.
When I got to the 5th tee, I concentrated on all of the items I could remember from the GMS class. I then proceeded to play 2 over for the last 14 holes, with 2 bogeys and 2 birdies to shoot 40-38 for a 78.
As I came to GMS as a 16 handicap (my current index is a 13 and it should go even lower), this was a career round for me. I then followed that round with a 38 at my local course on Saturday afternoon. So I finally have something on Ray Romano, I broke 80 and didn't even need Hank Haney, but did have the "Tick Tock" to get me to that score. Maybe Ray should try one of your 3 day GMS schools!!!
Your program works if you apply the techniques. I now truly feel like a Player instead of a Monkey, knowing what I am capable of accomplishing on the golf course.
Thanks again for all your drills and for giving me the tools to find success on the Golf Course,

“I Have Now Broken 80, 6 Times In 2 Months!"
Marc,
I have focused on 2 things this year, my putting which was pretty good and my driving which was really inconsistent and frequently wore me down. I have now broken 80 six times in the last 2 months and am now disappointed if I shoot more than 83 because I know I can play better.
Sensible planning really helps to avoid those triples and worse. I’ve had some days with nothing more than a 5 on my card.
I look forward to your email every week and am now much more of a Player than a Monkey (but not perfect yet!).

“From 7.8 To A 4.3 Handicap!”
A 40% Improvement In Scores!
Dear Marc,
I attended the GMS program in La Quinta, California 6 months ago with your Instructor, Sam Burge. At that time I was a 7.8 index. I am now playing to a 4.3 index.
I would have to say that much of that improvement is related to the GMS-related instruction I received from Sam. Of particular benefit are the putting drills – as this area is where the game is won/lost at the level I am (pretty) consistently playing at.
Thanks and congratulations on your continuing success as a business and in creating value and better golf for your clients.

“I Broke 80 For The First Time!"
From High 90's And 100+ To 78!
Alex, I broke 80 for the first time. When I attended my GMS session I was continuously in the high nineties with an occasional 100+ thrown in.
In my 60s and playing the 6,300 yd tees, I shot a 78 at a local course. I told everyone I didn't want to know how well I was doing going into the last 9 holes. I was just determined to do my best. On the last hole, I stuck to my plan, laid back away from all the trouble, and made par. I actually made par on the last 4 holes).

“God Bless GMS – God Bless The Stepping Drill!”
Marc,
I scored a 37 -- my lowest score ever at Mid-Valley!!!! My lowest nine holes anywhere since June 1, 2007!!
Every iron shot included the "GMS Stepping Drill", every shot! 14 putts, one birdie, three bogies, 4 GIRS. Can't tell you how good that felt.
God Bless GMS. God bless the Stepping Drill. God Bless Albert Einstein -- why? Because the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I told myself I needed to commit to the Stepping Drill – I did – and I played great!

“From A 15 Handicap To A 9.5 Handicap!”
(And Now A Single Digit Player!)
Marc,
I just wanted to update my game since I spent my time with GMS in St. Augustine in February 2009. My handicap is now 9.5 (it was a 15 when I attended).
I have consistently increased my control and distance and I keep making incremental strides in my game. I am breaking 80 much more than ever in my golf career. My attitude has completely changed on the course.
Thanks for the great school that keeps on giving long after the time I spent in Florida.

“From a 6.2 to 2.4 In Just Two Months!”
Hayden,
Just a quick update on the Brown County Amatuer Tournament. I was in the first flight (1.5 - 3.5 handicap index).
I played very well the first two days shooting 74 and 72 and was in first place. I did not play as well on Sunday and ended up shooting 79 for a 225 total. Just did not make as many putts.
This was the lowest score I have had in this tournament, so that is a positive. My handicap index is now down to 2.4. It was 6.2 when I came to GMS in June - so I have made a lot of progress and have continued to build off everything I have learned.
I have put in time practicing, but doing it the GMS way. Based on how I have been playing I have decided to play in the USGA Senior Amateur qualifying in September in Wisconsin. This will be a big challenge, but I now feel like I can compete at that level so I might as well go for it.
Again, I owe you a lot for helping me to improve. I can't tell you how much fun it is to play well on a consistent basis. Hope your summer is going well and let me know if you are coming to Green Bay.

“I Shot My Best Ever Competitive Round!”
Hayden,
Just wanted to pass along some news on my game and to thank you for the great instruction you provided to Buck and I. Today I played in the Wisconsin State Senior Match Play Qualifying (the top 32 qualify for match play - approximately 100 players entered). I have played in this event for several years and never have been able to play with enough consistency to qualify for match play but one other time.
Today, I shot my best ever competitive round - 2 under par 70. I ended up tied for second among all the qualifiers.
I won my first match 6 and 5 so I am still in the tournament. I really stuck to my PLAN all day and didn't get ahead of myself even when I got it to 4 under par. I didn't let making a couple of bogeys bother me.
Thanks to you and GMS I have not only significantly improved my ball striking, I now know how to hit shots that I didn't even know existed. As I liked to tell you at our class - these new shots are now in my "wheelhouse". Thanks again for the superb job you and everyone at GMS does. I would never been able to play this well if I had not been to GMS.

“I'm 69 Years Old And Playing My Best Golf Ever!”
Hi Jeff:
I know you haven't heard from me since I was in the GMS class in Innisbrook, but I never quit working and it paid off big time.
I'm 69 years old and playing the best golf ever! We were in Myrtle Beach on a 7 day golf outing with 8 guys. Everyone had about the same handicap as I did (a couple of guys were 3 strokes lower). For the whole week I had: the most birdies; the most skins; the low net score; the low gross score and the most money!
Back home on Monday, I shot a 77 at my home course. I'm now playing my dream of scoring under 80! It will be only a matter of time till I play my first scratch round.
Thank you GMS,

“I Won My Flight At The Pinehurst Match Play Championship!”
Hello Hayden,
My brother Mike insists that you'd want to know I had a little golf success lately. After giving serious consideration to giving up the game in December, I credit you fully for getting my tee shot sorted out and restoring enjoyment in playing the game.
I think I told you what a struggle I'd been having getting off the tee when Mike and I came to Coral Springs for your tutelage in February. My routine is so much more patient now as I take my time to focus, rehearse a smooth body turn with rhythm, and at just the right moment do my "tick tock."
I won four matches last week to take my flight (at the Pinehurst CC Match Play Championship), and now I'm looking ahead to the PCC Member-Member tournament beginning this coming Friday. I know I can par any hole on the two courses we're playing: we’re playing courses #4 and #5.
However the tournament comes out, my passion for golf is resurrected and I'm looking ahead with optimism. Thanks again for your patient instruction and encouragement.
Cheers,

“I Shot 79 And My Goal Was To Break 80!”
Alex – I wanted to let you know I thought GMS was excellent in that the basic philosophy and teaching methods really do break the game down to its most simple terms and with the drills, reinforce the basics. It all made sense and we didn't need a box of Band-Aids for our hands----Derrick is a great teacher.
I played 18 today, the first chance I had to use the teachings-----shot 79----my goal was to break 80 --- so I am 1 for 1 so far.
Thanks again - Glad I did it

“My Lowest Scores Ever!”
Hello Hayden,
Beth and I wanted to let you know how we are progressing in the two months since our Golf Made Simple three day golf school. Beth is playing some great golf. A week and 1/2 ago she shot her lowest score, an 85 on our home course. Her putting and ball striking have improved greatly. The most significant improvement is her confidence. The Women's Club Championship is in two weeks and she is very excited about her chances.
I am still humming when I have the driver in my hand and the results are fantastic. More fairways lead to lower scores. I shot two 78's this week which are my lowest scores ever. I am also enjoying the short game. When I miss a green I look forward to chipping it close to the pin and one putting. I am also using my time at the range more productively and before every round I go through the 29 ball drill which helps my rhythm significantly.
We plan on taking the Level 1.5 course in the Autumn.

“I Will Tell Anyone That Will Listen How Great GMS Is!”
Alex & Alex (and Sam),
I wanted to send an email expressing my gratitude for the instruction I received at the GMS 1.5 class in La Quinta on Feb 22-24.
First off, SilverRock is an incredible resort! The driving range area is nicer than the fairways on most courses I play. That was the best course I have ever been to---great job with selecting it!
Sam Burge was our instructor and he blew my expectations away. He was able to build upon what we learned in GMS 1.0 and take my game to the next level. I now fully appreciate the brilliance of the GMS drills that Marc has created.
Sam has a very rare combination of personality & teaching skills and he worked so hard until he found the best way to help me understand the drills & their purpose. Sam took the time to really understand my game, my strengths, my weaknesses & my learning style. He then delivered the instruction in ways that I could absorb.
He is a brilliant instructor & a true professional. It was like he had watched me play golf for years & understood my thinking and could see areas I needed to improve upon. It was the most fun golfing I have ever had in my life & I really liked Sam and his teaching style.
Even better than that was that Sam was a tireless worker. He did whatever was necessary to help us improve and worked some long hours. He knew what I was capable of and pushed me to become better. As a result, I have come back and dedicated myself to a practice plan.
In my 1st round out since I got back, I had 13 GIR and shot an 81 in windy conditions. In my 2nd round, I had 9 GIR and shot a 79 in even windier conditions. The 2nd round was better because I really worked hard to let the bad shots go. Sam helped me understand that was affecting my game & he proved his point. I bogied the 17th hole and then let it go. I focused 1 shot a time and on the 18th hit a 300 yard drive with a slight draw (thanks Sam!!), a 6 iron 190 yards to a tough guarded green & 2 putted for a birdie (and a 79). It felt so good to have been able to forget about the bad shots and just move onto the next shot. And it was more fun because I was in a better mood.
Based on my experience, I tell anyone who will listen how great GMS is and how great the instruction I received from Sam was. Please thank him for his efforts & forward him this email. That is a trip I will never forget and I feel fortunate to have been a part of his class. I look forward to taking GMS 2.0 from him!
Thanks,

“11 Fairways And 11 Greens In Regulation!”
Hi Hayden,
Quick update; played first 18 today in 30 mph winds, hit 11 fairways and 11 greens in regulation.
Was I happy? You know I was!
I hit the ball straighter than when I was an 11 handicap - forty years ago. I think you'd be proud. Stay well!
