The Jones Course
The Jones Course is a par 72 that showcases the rolling terrain and the master touch of a pioneer in environmentally respectful golf design. With views of the Virginia countryside, the layout incorporates fields, woodlands, natural stone outcroppings and centuries-old rock walls.
The key to success on the Jones Course is the ability to accurately judge the effects of the elevation changes. For example, the par-3 13th hole features a 50-foot drop from tee to green, requiring a carry over a creek that runs across the front of the green, as well as a stone wall that dates back to the 1700s.
The Jones Course provides mental challenges with risk-reward holes as well as physical tests with a pair of classic, three-shot par 5s. Greens and tees on the Jones Course are Bentgrass, while fairways are a user-friendly Zoysia and the rough is Fescue.
The Norman Course
Debuting in the Fall of 2005, the first work by the legendary “Great White Shark” in the Mid-Atlantic incorporates the natural undulations of the Potomac River Valley, meandering along the Potomac River. These 18 holes include the last 4 holes that have been named “The Hardest Mile In Golf” since they measure 1,760 yards — which is equal to one mile.
The rolling terrain of the par 72 winds through a mature hardwood forest and along rock outcroppings. Those natural elements combine with historic sites on the 12th and 13 holes to form the course’s distinct character.
Capable of hosting championship competition, the Norman Course remains enjoyable for everyday golfers, with tees that fit a multitude of ability levels – including the memorable “Island Tees” on the par-4 10th hole. The Norman Course consists of Bentgrass on the greens, tees and fairways, while the rough consists of fescue.
The Sharkbite Course
Opened in the spring of 2007, this nine-hole layout fashioned by Greg Norman loops along the banks of The Potomac River and historic Goose Creek. The Sharkbite Course incorporates green complexes, bunkering and contours that match the full-length Norman Course, and also features Bentgrass on the greens, tees and fairways, while the rough consists of fescue.
Although the course wouldn't be what many consider to be a regulation golf course - the course consists of four par 3s and five par 4s - it's a lot of fun and is probably in better shape than 99% of the golf courses in America.
*GMS will primarily be using the Jones Course and the Norman Course for our 9 holes of On-course Instruction each afternoon.
